Genesis 10:

Why are genealogies important?

Genesis 11:

v. 4 - What's wrong here?

  1. From a secular standpoint, genealogies give us a sense of history, tradition, and family. When we went to Indiana for Thanksgiving, I took Hunter to local cemeteries so he could see how many tombstones had Ellison and Roberts (my dad's mom's side) on them.

From a religious standpoint, genealogies can illustrate God's faithfulness through all generations. One of the best assignments I had as an undergrad was a family religious history. I learned a lot about my mom's dad's ministry (he was a Methodist minister) and discovered that the Roberts line includes Bishop Roberts, Wesley's successor who brought Methodism to the Midwest. I have a rich history all around!

  2. Genesis 11:4 - What's wrong here?

God commanded us to fill the earth and the people were doing the exact opposite. They were building a city and a tower so that they wouldn't be dispersed over the earth. So again we see man's blatant sin by doing the opposite of what God has told him to do coupled with man's arrogance of believing that the plans of man are more important than the will of God. This is evident in my life by my tendency to make plans without praying about what God's will for my life is and for assuming that I have the power to control everything that happens to me. Then life spirals out of control and I have to rely on God to get me out of the mess I've gotten myself into - again.
