Verse 16:3 - "What's wrong here? Can you argue with their conclusion?"
ReplyDeleteIf you're walking by sight, I guess what Abram and Sarai did makes sense. If you're walking by faith, not so much! Abram had already received several words from God ("I will make you a great nation," 12:2; "Blessed be Abram by God Most High," 14:19; "I am your shield," 15:2), but they still blamed Him ("The Lord has kept me from having children," 16:2) and decided to help Him out.
I don't want to be too quick to point fingers, as I've certainly been guilty of the same thing! I have a tendency to try to run ahead of God; I did it a lot during the job search, when I got my heart set on a place that was not His plan for us. I'm trying now to neither run ahead nor lag behind, but rather to "keep in step with the Spirit" (to borrow the title of a book by JI Packer).
After 90 years, I'd probably be ready to fulfill the promise myself.
